Spoiler alert: this “secret” document isn’t really a secret! It’s actually a document that employers are legally required to provide to new employees. I know this doesn’t always happen; things can slip through the cracks. So if you don’t have it, haven’t got around to it, or have never heard of it, now’s your chance!
The “Secret” Document
The Fair Work Statement explains the rights of you and your employees. It tells employees about the National Employment Standards and provides basic information about working expectations in Australia, including:
- Flexible working conditions
- Parental and adoption leave
- Termination and unfair dismissal regulations, and
- The breaches of these
The Statement sets out the responsibilities of both parties and provides a sound base from which to start a discussion about the behavioural and cultural expectations of your company. Furthermore, it will put you in a good position to initiate a conversation with employees who aren’t meeting those expectations in the future.
How do I get it?
If you haven’t provided the Fair Work Statement to your employees, you need to fix that right now. Distribute it as part of a team meeting to inform staff of employer and employee obligations. Don’t make a big deal of it, but do make sure they get a copy. You can download it here.
I recommend that you keep it handy, so you always have it when you need it. In addition, you should familiarise yourself with the National Employment Standards laid out on the Fair Work website to make sure you, your company and your employees are meeting all the requirements and can continue to work productively.
